The 6th South Island Limousin Bull Trial officially commenced last Tuesday with 12 of the region’s best yearling bulls being entered. The bulls arrived on-farm during August with the few weeks in between serving as a settling in period. Whilst most are full French, there are a few polled animals amongst them. Notable bloodlines amongst the bulls include Ionesco, On-Dit, Patocle, Ronick Member and Mandayen Vision.
The trial is again being run near Dunsandel in Canterbury (South Island, NZ). Limousin is one of the few beef breeds in NZ that continue to successfully run such evaluation trials. The North Island trial is also underway near Morrinsville (North Island, NZ). Both trials allow participating breeders to compare their stud animals to others and improve their own breeding programmes. With NZ breeders being relatively small in number, and spread out geographically, both trials provide a positive focus for members and a forum for information sharing.
