A number of repeat buyers snapped up the majority of bulls offered at the North Island Limousin Breeders’ Group Bull Trial Sale on June 3rd. Of the 12 bulls offered, 9 were purchased for commercial use and 3 went for stud duties. The average price was just under $2600. The highest priced bull at $3750 was Mangatawhiri Hugo a well structured bull with excellent muscling by On-Dit. Hugo was purchased for stud duties at Riverheights Stud by Don Robertson from Ashburton. Other bulls destined for stud were Phoenix Harrod by a son of Mandayen Vision, sold to Grayleen Stud and Ngarimu Hendrekus a polled bull sold to Caberfeidh Stud.
There was increased interest in the bulls following Limousin calves topping the weaner sales at both Taupo and Te Kuiti this autumn. The top pen of 248kg Limousin weaners at the Te Kuiti weaner Fair sold for $3.16/kg which was around 50 cents per kilo better than for any other animal in the sale. Although the breed is still not widely used on commercial farms, buyers of previous bull trial bulls have had such success with their bulls’ progeny that they were back to purchase more.

The bull trial concept ensures that bulls from a number of different studs are run under the same conditions so weight gain and feed conversion can be compared over the 10 month period. The bulls are also put under some handling pressure and temperament is well tested. Temperament has been a strong focus over recent years and this year the bulls were exceptionally quiet happily accepting a throng of buyers inspecting them in the paddock pre sale.
The new property at Limax Enterprises operated by Richard and Diana Maxwell worked well. The bulls were run under commercial conditions including weathering a late drought with minimal supplementary hay. On sale day the bulls the bulls had gained an average of just under 200kg during the trial and were in excellent condition.
