22nd North Island Limousin Breeders’ Bull Trial Update

North Island Bull Trial Open Day Brings Strong Interest

There was strong interest from previous buyers and breeders at the North Island Limousin Bull Trial pre Christmas Open Day in Matamata.  This is the 22nd year for the North Island Bull trial which brings bulls together from different breeders and runs them under the same conditions.

This year’s 14 yearling bulls were weighed and docility tested followed by a paddock walk by attendees.  “It has been a great turn-out” said Peta Lean NILB president, ”Every year we have many return buyers to the sale as they know the bulls have been run on hills under commercial conditions.

They often say “you know what you get with these bulls.  It’s great to see some of them checking out the bulls now before the summer dry”.

This year’s draft includes a great range of new genetics and breeders appreciated the chance to see how these different genetics were performing on a level playing field.

A number of previous pedigree buyers and some new breeders came to the open day including vendor and past buyer Julie Evans who uses it as a platform for testing of Grayleen Stud. “The bulls are in excellent order, showing good length and thickness,” commented Julie, “the trial conditions provide an excellent docility. This group of bulls performed well with the new experience of a paddock inspection. I am also interesting to see the increasing number of polled bulls with 12 of the 14 being polled including one homozygous polled by CF Jim Dandie.”

Docility remains an important measure and on the rare occasion that a bull is not settled in either the yard, crush or paddock, they are eliminated.  The weights are on target under Richard and Diana Maxwell’s watchful eye, with an average of 565kg in mid December and an impressive top weight of 642kg for a polled son of Wulf’s Extractor.

The weighing is held around the 20th of every month. If you would like to attend then please contact “Weigh Day Convenor” Peta Lean on 028 258 14890 or “Bull Trial Convenor” Robert Hunt on 021 624 302.
